By and large, most senior centers are identified with
recreational programming, especially the inevitable BINGO. This may change in the future, but for now,
it is a popular draw. There are usually
day trips, arts and crafts, card games, sports, talk groups or special interest
groups, educational programs and many other recreational activities for older
adults to enjoy. If you or a loved one
is alone at home and able to get out and about, contact your local Senior
Center.
You will be glad you did. In Social Services, we see far too many
older adults living alone, self-isolated and usually depressed. Being with others and staying active are key
to a healthy and happy retirement. If
you don’t like what is offered at your senior center, get involved and
volunteer to run a program or activity that you do like and invite other
seniors to join you. Any senior center
is only as good as the seniors who attend and take part.
Private venues of entertainment often have senior discounts,
as do restaurants and stores.
Sometimes, the discounts are only available for certain times or days,
but they are there for you to take advantage of even if you have to vary your
schedule.
Libraries often have free movies available to the public and
Park Districts and Y’s often offer free or reduced-rate programs for seniors.
Look around and see what recreation activities are available
in your area and get off the couch and get involved.
